First Parish Hall for Sale, Not Church or Parsonage

The First Parish Hall is on the market for $699,000. Neither the Meeting House nor the parsonage are being sold.

Is your non-profit organization looking for meeting space in the town of Westwood? If so, consider the First Parish Hall at 340 Clapboardtree Street at the intersection of Nahatan Street.

The property is listed with Realtor Douglas Joseph with Coldwell Banker in Westwood for $699,000.

Joseph describes the Parish Hall as…

Picturesque setting for future educational or religious use clients who are looking for an ideal urban location in a private wooded setting. Over 10,000 sq. ft. of living area in two buildings, each with two floors. Plenty of parking spaces available and there are expansion possibilities. The larger building has a stage which is used for theater productions, a large working kitchen on the first floor and full lavatory facilities in the basement. Five classrooms, two offices and meeting space.
The property has a combined 10,334 square feet of spec on 2.61 acres, and is assessed at $1,470,850. The lot has mature plantings, a stone wall, and is in a residential neighborhood. There is also room for expansion, if need be.

Only the Parish Hall which was originally built in 1956 as a couples club (approximately 8,600 square feet) and nearby cottage office space (approximately 1,700 square feet) are for sale, not the Meeting House or parsonage located across Nahatan Street.

"We don't want people to be confused; we're only selling the Parish Hall, not the church," said Joseph.

"It has been a dream to be on one side of the street and to have one contiguous building that allows us to do what we see as important in our ministry and mission," said Reverend Christopher Dodge, noting the congregation recently updated its mission definition so the timing is right.

Having all activities on one side of the street is important to keeping all parishioners, particularly seniors and children, safe, they said.

The parish will only sell the property to another non-profit organization. The ideal buyer, said Joseph is one that would consider collaborating with the parish and who would allow the Clapboardtree Nursery School (now celebrating its 40th anniversary on site) to continue renting the lower level of the building.

"We would sell to any kind of non-profit and that could run the gamut from religious to social to educational," said Dodge.

After the church is sold, the parish will use the proceeds to build an addition to the back of its sanctuary across the street.
