Selectmen Approve Additional Funds to Snow Removal Budget

The Westwood DPW requested an additional $200,000 be added to the budget this week.

The Westwood Board of Selectmen approved yet another expansion to the town's Snow/Ice Removal Budget Monday night to help deal with the overwhelming amount of snow that has accumulated this winter.

The approval allows the Department of Public Works to take a step further and seek approval of the additional $200,000 to the budget from the Westwood Finance Commission. Both , which began at $250,000 prior to the start of the winter.

To date, the town has already endured 14 winter storms since December 20, according to Westwood DPW Director Vicki Quiram, costing the town $625,000.

"We hope that we'll see a trend decreasing," Quiram said at Monday night's Selectmen meeting. "We have 72 inches of snow so far in Westwood. We're putting it everywhere we can right now, and hoping we can answer the public's questions."

Selectmen Chair Nancy Hyde indicated that the feedback she's heard from residents in town in relation to Quiram's work with the DPW has been extremely positive.

"I just want to commend you," Hyde said Monday night. "I know it's not a perfect process, but I am hearing more than ever a tremendous amount of compliments, so please tell the (DPW) staff that people care enough to pass that along."

Quiram will attend next week's Finance Commission meeting to request further approval of the addtional funds.
