Selectman Named to State Educational Financing Authority Board

Phil Shapiro has been appointed to the MEFA Board of Directors, in an announcement Friday afternoon.

Westwood Board of Selectmen Third Member Phil Shapiro has been appointed to the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority's Board of Directors, according to a statement from Babson College on Friday. MEFA is a non-profit, self-financing state authority.

Shapiro, who serves as the Vice President of Finance and the Chief Financial Officer at Babson, has been in the role since 2005.

At the Wellesley school, Shapiro is responsible for financial planning, budgeting, treasury, accounting, investment and purchasing functions. 

He was formerly  a managing director in the Public Finance Department of Standard and Poor's, which he joined in 1993 to help establish and manage the Boston office.

He was also the CFO for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, as well as a Budget Director and Director of Investor Relations at New England Corp. He also formerly served as an Executive Director of the MBTA Advisory Board and Special Assistant to Governor James B. Longley of Maine. 

Shapiro holds 30 years of public and private sector experience in finance and management, and holds a B.A. from Amherst College, as well as an M.Ed. from the University of Maine, Orono and an M.B.A. from Boston College. 

He is a member of the Boston Economic Club, EACUBO, NACUBO and is on the Advisory Board of the CFO Alliance. 

Moreover, he is a former adjunct lecturer in Public Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and currently teaches the course, Water in America, at Babson. He is member of the Board of Directors of ISO New England, and received a 2010 CFO of the Year award from the Boston Business Journal.
