Recreation Department Postpones Westwood Day

The town-wide event will now return in Fall 2012.

Westwood residents will have to wait another year before celebrating the return of the long-dormant Westwood Day.

The Westwood Recreation Department, which had this year, said Tuesday that it has instead postponed the celebration until Fall 2012.

"It really gives us the opportunity to really plan properly," Burnes said. "We were a little ambitious to think that we could pull of an event of that magnitude in four months."

Burnes explained his plans to revive Westwood Day to the Board of Selectmen in May. Aside from a centennial parade held in 2000, no such town-wide event has taken place in Westwood in .

To bring something back, Burnes said he wants to take the time to prepare for something that brings together everyone, not just in celebration, but in planning as well.

"In Westwood, a lot of people go away for the summer, so a lot of the community support you need to make it an extraordinary day wasn't going to be there," Burnes said. "We really want to take our time, organize strong committees and a good action plan, and move forward."

The department is looking to form anywhere from six to eight committees this September, Burnes said, and will ask the community to attend a meeting to express their interest.

The Westwood Recreation Commission will be the advisor to those committees, he added.

"We'll be looking at creating a committee on setting up informational booths, an activities committee, all kinds of different things," Burnes said. "But I think it's appropriate that we're taking our time and I think we need to do it right."

The event will happen in either September or October 2012.
