How Safe is Massachusetts?

A study recently found that although Massachusetts is the overall safest state in the US, it ranks alarmingly low on a few measures of safety.

WalletHub, a personal finance social media network, recently followed up its analysis of 2014’s Best & Worst Cities for Families with an in-depth look at the Safest States to Live In and ranked Massachusetts as the number one safest state in the US.

However, while the state is clearly doing well in some safety measures, particularly financial and workplace safety, its rankings in other categories are alarming. Massachusetts ranked fourth in murder and non-negligent manslaughter per capita, and ninth in sex offenders per capita.

Other rankings included safety conditions in Massachusetts such as:

  • 39th – Public Hospital Rankings

  • 41st – Assault per Capita

  • 8th – Percentage of People Who Spend More Than They Make

  • 4th – Annual Consumer Savings Account Averages

  • 12th – Number of Climate Disasters (over 1 billion in damage)

  • 3rd- Percentage of People with a Rainy Day Fund

  • 3rd - Lowest Bullying Incidents Rate

MA was also ranked number one in overall financial safety and driving safety, fifth in workplace safety, 25th in natural disasters, and second in home and community safety.

Marguerite, you need to go back and read your links again for comprehension. You state that Massachusetts ranked "second in fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel". In the sources you cite it actually says just the opposite, it ranked second LOWEST. I can't even find the percentage of people without health insurance statistic in your linked articles, but I'll bet you quite a bit that you have that one backwards too. Anyone wanting to use this Patch article to support their political ranting has best go fact check this article first ;).

Drive the Mass. Pike then across Nevada on US 50. Where do you feel safer? Come on this is so much nonsense.

How could any intelligent person feel safe in a one-party state? Your pockets are being picked continuously, and 'legally'.

Hey Death Panel Boy (TJ), Care to name the Republicans in MA who are schmoozing the Obama and Patrick misadministrations to get permitted for the wind turbines here ?

CORI checks odon;t work in Mass. Call CORI and ask for the legal department. They will tell you that undocumented people have a completely clean record after they cross the Mexico border. State and local police will tell you the same. Look at this video and call CORI - Massachusetts - ask for legal -CORI Unit at (617) 660-4640.
