Westwood Police Logs: Dozen Mailboxes Stolen, Damaged

The following information was provided by the Westwood Police Department. Where arrests are mentioned, they do not indicate conviction.

Monday, Aug. 13 

Mailbox Larceny (8:19 a.m.) - A resident of Shermans Way in Westwood reported to police that someone had removed their mailbox from its foundation. The incident was one of several reported during the last week.

Stolen Vehicle Found (12:21 a.m.) - A 2000 Buick that had previously been reported stolen from Hogan Tire on Washington Street was recovered during the midnight shift on Tuesday, Aug. 14, according to police reports. It is believed that the vehicle was stolen while it was left for service at the Hogan Tire service station. The keys were either in the vehicle at the time or the perpetrator who stole the vehicle accessed the key box and removed the vehicle from the property, police said. 

Solicitor Arrested (5:44 p.m.) - After receiving a complaint regarding a solicitor on Dela Park Road, Westwood police identified and arrested a New Haven, Connecticut resident on an outstanding warrant out of Leominster District Court.

Wednesday, Aug. 15

Hyde Park Man Arrested (2 a.m.) - Westwood Police arrested a 27-year-old Hyde Park man on Providence Highway after he was found driving along Rte. 1 at 84 miles per hour. The driver was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, a marked lanes violation and speeding. 

Thursday, Aug. 16

Mansfield Teen Arrested (9:58 a.m.) - Police arrested a 19-year-old man from Mansfield for operating a vehicle with a revoked driver's license after a "Be On the Look Out" call was broadcast from the Norwood Police Department in regards to a prior hit-and-run incident involving property damage. A Westwood officer then identified the vehicle described in the broadcast and later apprehended the individual in question, police said. 

Saturday, Aug. 18

Dozen Mailboxes Removed (3:10 a.m.) - In an incident that may be related to a mailbox theft on Aug. 13, police received nearly a dozen separate reports of mailboxes being damaged or stolen in the same neighborhood of Cobleigh Street, Whitney Avenue and Shermans Way. The reports varied in nature, as some mailboxes were reported missing, while others were reported to have been ripped out and left on front lawns, and one report was filed of a mailbox being left in front of a main entrance to a home. Police are investigating the incidents.
