Storm Leaves Little Damage, Power Outages in Westwood

A few power outages were reported Thursday as a result of Wednesday's storm.

Despite nearly a 12 hour-long and an added from the National Weather Service, area storms on Wednesday caused little, if any, damage in Westwood. 

While a handful of damaging tornadoes touched down in various areas of Western Massachusetts as a result of the storms, the biggest threat in Westwood were various power outages.

"We were watching (the storm) carefully, and watching the path," said Vicki Quiram, Director of the Westwood Department of Public Works, which was relying on a back-up generator for power as of early Thursday morning. "We still have a power outage on this side of town."

Quiram said that sewer crews were working to ensure that generators and pumps were working to ensure there were no sewer overflows as a result of the storm.

NSTAR spokesperson Michael Durand said Thursday morning that initial info showed about 500 customers reported power outages in Westwood related to the storm.

One area that faced outages was at the , as the station briefly lost power, causing staff to rely on a back-up generator. Power has since been restored  at the station, and all equipment is fully reliable.

"There were sporadic power outages that were immediately reported to NSTAR (as a result of the storm)," said Westwood Police Detective Paul Toland. "We do still have an issue with some traffic signals that have been placed in the flash mode because of storm-related issues, but we don't have anything significant beyond that."
