State Police Warn Drivers of Black Ice as Temps Drop

So long, warm weather. 

As temperatures in Westwood and throughout the region began to drop to a more average level for the month of December on Wednesday, Massachusetts State Police issued a warning about driving in poor weather conditions.

The warning comes after the National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook and a flood watch for most of the state, including Westwood, on Wednesday. 

While some areas throughout the state will see rain change over to snow, Westwood will see a majority of rainfall throughout the evening, according to NWS.

"Rain will continue through this afternoon with additional areas of rain moving through tonight," the Flood Watch stated. "Embedded convection within the area of rain tonight will contribute to higher rainfall rates during the overnight period . . . flooding of poor drainage and urban areas is likely, along with potential small stream flooding."

The flood watch remains in effect from 5 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday morning, according to NWS.

State Police reiterated the warning in a news statement Wednesday afternoon, during which they urged drivers to be vigilant about driving cautiously in the bad weather conditions.

"Localized flooding may occur across much of the state," State Police said in the statement. "Motorists are reminded to drive slowly, to leave extra space between themselves in the vehicles ahead of them, and to avoid driving through standing water and large puddles."

State Police went on to state that the timing of Wednesday's storm will leave messy conditions for the Thursday morning commute, and drivers are urged to be aware of any potential black ice along the roadways.
