Rescue Crews Use Jaws of Life in East Street Accident

One woman was transported by MedFlight on Wednesday afternoon.

One woman was injured and flown into a Boston-area hospital Wednesday afternoon after her car collided with another under the MBTA train bridge on East Street.

Westwood Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, and crews were forced to use the Jaws of Life to help free the victim.

"It took a few minutes to get her out of there," said Westwood Deputy Fire Chief Mike Reardon. "I don't know the extent of her injuries; she was conscious and alert. She was talking to us through the whole thing."

The woman was then taken by EMS crews to a MedFlight helicopter, which landed at Morrisson Field, and transported to a Bosotn-area hospital. It was not immediately clear Wednesday which hospital she was taken to.

The helicopter was near the area, according to Westwood Fire Lt. David Pond, who said the woman, while injured, was taken by MedFlight as a matter of precaution.

"We flew her primarily because the accident appeared to be severe," Pond said. "It's a very narrow area. The woman in the other car was already out of the way, they took her to the hosiptal just to check her out."

The two vehicles involved collided on the driver's side of each car directly under the bridge, and both cars were towed from the scene due to extensive damage.

Traffic was blocked off from a section of of the road for about an hour, and trains were asked to hold travel while crews treated the victim.
