He explained that in a fire, smoke rises up to the ceilings, sets off the alarms and then pushes back to the floor. He toldthe children that they need to stay low to the ground, and go to the nearest exit to get out.

The second is “Go Outand Stay Out.” He explained to the children that you never go back into the house if you forget something such as apet, or a toy etc.

Since a common problem in fire rescues is children hiding because they are afraid of a firefighter in his or her gear, Firefighter Smith brought in all the clothes and equipment he wears when responding to a fire. He put on his gear to show the children what a firefighter looks like in his gear, and explained not to be afraid since firefighters are there tohelp.

Firefighter Smith also covered calling 911—after you get out—and the importance of knowing and giving yourstreet address. He discussed the importance of practicing fire drills at home as a family and establishing an outside meeting place where everyone gathers in the event of an emergency. Finally, Firefighter Smith demonstrated how afire detector works and explained the importance of having detectors in the home.

The children thoroughly enjoyed Firefighter Smith’s visit and learned some important lessons about fire safety. Thank you again to the for taking the time to educate our community!
