Grossman Camp Officials Say Loss Of Building Will Not Affect Camp

After a  at the Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston Grossman Camp on the Westwood-Dover line Wednesday, camp officials said they are looking at rebuilding and that camp operations would not be affected by the loss of the building.

“It is a facility that houses bunks, basically units for the kids,” said Carol Trager, vice president of marketing for the camp. “We're going to look at rebuilding it.” 

However, Trager said that with the camp opening next month they are currently looking at more temporary options.

“Our plan is to use a temporary facility over the summer like a tent or something like that,” Trager said. 

The loss of the building, she added, would not affect the operations of the camp and that despite the fire the camp is still safe. 

“Absolutely, we would never consider opening the camp if we thought it would be unsafe,” Trager said.

Camp officials are in the process of determining the value of the building; Trager said there was nothing of significant value that was lost in the blaze.

"There were minor things inside the building," Trager said. “There was some balls, bats, and camping equipment in it that will need to be replaced.”

She said there was no word Thursday regarding any more information about what may have caused the fire and that crews are working on getting the debris cleaned up.

Trager said that to her knowledge nothing like the fire has happened at the camp in the past.
