Fire Weather Watch in Effect for March 27

March might not go out like a lamb after all. 

On the heels of a remarkable week of sunshine and record warmth, the National Weather Service is warning about a hard freeze tonight and elevated fire weather potential into tomorrow, Tuesday, March 27.

Late Monday afternoon, an earlier hazardous weather outlook was elevated to a Fire Weather Watch for Tuesday. 

"Extremely dry air combined with gusty northwest winds and little rainfall over the last few weeks will result in critical fire weather conditions during Tuesday," the Service said, noting fires that start could spread rapidly and outdoor burning is not recommended.

On Monday, the NWS issued a hazardous weather outlook for a good portion of New England, including Westwood, which warns that strong winds and low relative humidity values create elevated fire weather potential. As well, the outlook said a “hard freeze” is expected tonight into tomorrow morning across the area.

“Although the growing season does not for a few more weeks, with the above average temperatures last week some green up has already occurred,” the NWS statement says.

Tuesday is expected to be a sunny but breezy day, with a high near 43 and a still strong north wind, with gusts getting up to 30 mph.

While those winds would be powerful, for sure, they don’t quite reach the level where the NWS would issue a wind advisory.

According to past reports, the Service issues wind advisories when sustained winds are expected to be between 31 and 39 miles per hour or gusts will be between 46 and 57 miles per hour.
