Fire Causes Approx. $150K in Damages to Westwood Home

A two-alarm fire Saturday night may have been caused by a defective fireplace.

Although it had not been determined Monday what caused , Westwood Fire Officials said the most likely culprit was a malfunctioning fireplace.

"A representative of the State Fire Marshal's office has not finished his investigation, nor has the Chief (William Scoble) finished his," Westwood Deputy Fire Chief Mike Reardon said Monday. "In all likelihood, it's pointing to a malfunction of the fireplace."

The Westwood Fire Department responded to 29 Crystal Hill Terrace after receiving report of a fire there at 9:35 p.m. Saturday night.

"(The fire) was confined to one room, the roof, a wall, the floor, and the fireplace," Reardon said. "Currently, the losses are estimated at $150,000."

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, for no one was home at the time, Reardon added. No animals were present inside the residence.

Westwood Fire was assisted by engines from Norwood, Canton, Walpole, and Needham Fire Departments, as well as one ladder from the Dedham Fire Department, Reardon said. Dover Fire Officials, meanwhile, covered Westwood headquarters during the fire. The last unit left the scene at around 1:23 a.m. Sunday.

"It was maybe an hour before the fire was declared under control," Reardon said.
