Car Fire Sparks Two-Alarm Blaze at Budget Inn

Officials from Westwood and surrounding towns responded to the fire on Thursday.

Fire officials from Westwood and surrounding towns responded to a two-alarm fire that began with a vehicle at the Budget Inn on Providence Highway shortly after 12:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, which originated as a car fire behind the building that eventually extended to the rear of the building itself, according to Westwood Fire Chief William Scoble.

It wasn't immediately clear as to what caused the vehicle to ignite, Scoble said, and an investigation is pending.

Crews from the Westwood Fire Department, as well as from Walpole, Canton, and Norwood were on scene to help battle the blaze.

Tenants of the lodging were temporarily displaced, and two people were temporarily trapped on the second balcony at the rear of the building, said Scoble. Those individuals, however, were out of the building within five to ten minutes.

"They got to the front of the building, so they were out of harm's way," Scoble said.
