Braintree Man Crashes Car in Westwood, MedFlight Called for Transport

The driver of a van is being charged with driving under the influence after crashing his van on Canton Street.

A 65-year-old Braintree man was flown out of Westwood by a Boston MedFlight helicopter Friday afternoon after crashing his van on Canton Street near Hemlock Drive. 

The victim reportedly crashed his 2001 Dodge conversion van into a wall on Canton Street, according to Westwood Deputy Fire Chief Roderick Morrison, who was on the scene at Morrison Field.

Westwood Police and Fire departments responded to the scene on Canton Street after receiving a call for the accident at around 1:07 p.m. on Friday.

The van reportedly drove off the road, up an embankment, struck a stone wall and rolled over onto its passenger side before coming to a rest on its wheels in a driveway on Canton Street, according to a statement from Westwood Police.

The driver had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, and as a result ended up in the passenger side of the vehicle, Morrison said at the scene.

Westwood Police are charging the operator for operating under the influence of alcohol, a second offense, as well as operating a motor vehicle to endanger and failing to stay within marked lanes.

While the seriousness of the man's injuries were not immediately known Friday afternoon, but he was transported to Morrison Field behind the Islington Fire Station and Roche Bros. Roche Bros. supermarket

It was there that MedFlight and Westwood Fire crews escorted the man onto the helicopter, which then took the victim to Boston Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. 

The Braintree man was the lone occupant of the vehicle, according to Westwood Police, and no other vehicles were reported to have been involved in the crash.
