Former Bruin, Northeastern Coach 'Ferny' Flaman Dies at 85

Once a defenseman and captain for the Boston Bruins, local resident Ferdinand "Ferny" Flaman recently died of cancer at his Westwood home on June 23 at the age of 85.

Flaman retired from the Bruins in 1961, according to a Boston.com report; he signed with the team in 1943. He was an inductee to six sports Halls of Fame, and also held 255 hockey coaching victories at Northeastern University between 1970 and 1989, according to Boston.com.

Flaman also played with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1950-1955, during which time he helped the team win the Stanley Cup in 1951, according to an obituary on the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home website. 

Flaman was the husband of Jeanne M. (Magner) Flaman for 65 years. He is the father of the late Terrance E. Flaman, married to Cheryl (Sullivan) of Walpole; Laura M. (Flaman) Fletcher, married to David of Barrington, Rhode Island; and Ferny K. married to Bonnie (Brock) of Walpole. He is the grandfather to Kelly D. Flaman, Fiancée to Tyler Roberts of Charlestown, Todd E., married to Sarah (Bornemann) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Eric K. and Lisa L. of Walpole, and great-grandfather of Molly L. Flaman of Atlanta, Georgia.

Friends and family are invited to attend visiting hours in the on High Rock St. in Westwood on Thursday, June 28 from 1-4 p.m., and then again from 6-8 p.m., according to the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home website. A memorial service will be celebrated in on Friday, June 29, at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
