Westwood Recreation Launches Adaptive Programs

The programs are now underway and families can register online.

While the Westwood Recreation Department has been busy in the last year preparing for , officials have also begun a new set of programs within the department.

The come at the hand of the department's newest member, Cori Trombly, who has been a Westwood resident for the last six years.

"This is the first endeavor with the Adaptive Programming," said Trombly, a certified school councilor who holds a Master's in Education with a specialty in Special Education.

While the new programs are open to all children in Westwood, they are also designed to help cater to children and students with special needs.

"My view coming in is I very much beleive it takes a village to raise a child," Trombly said. "One thing parents have been saying is they have to go to other towns for [certain] services. I know there's early intervention, there's speech therapy and all these therapies kids can do. But there's none especially locally where they can come. It's a safe environment. They can just have fun, be themselves and learn and play."

The programs offer individuals with special needs and their families an opportunity to participate in fun, supported recreational activities.

"That's my goal," Trombly said. "To create another branch that parents can reach out to. It's just another layer of support for parents within the community."

Trombly, who has children in Westwood, said she researched other nearby communities to see what they had in place, and designed the Westwood programs after the CORSE foundation in Scituate

"It's very much on key with what I'm looking to do here," she said.
