Memorial Day Weekend

Whatever we decide to do this weekend, I will be thinking about what Memorial Day truly means. I'm proud to live in a town that works hard to celebrate this holiday.

Memorial Day Weekend for my family marks the start of the summer season. There are no sporting events planned (thank you Westwood Youth Lacrosse). This weekend is strictly set aside for family.

I didn’t realize there were so many properties close to Westwood. But given that Westwood has Hale Reservation, we might just go there and take a nature walk.

We might also check out Powessit Farm in Dover on Saturday for their second of two seedling sales taking place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Last weekend they had a fantastic set up with all sorts of choices.  One thing that caught my eye was a hollowed out gourd with tiny basil seedlings sprouting inside – very clever those farmers are….

Whatever we decide to do this weekend, I will be thinking about what Memorial Day truly means. I’m proud to live in a town that works hard to celebrate this holiday. There is a parade, speakers and flowers lain on graves. It’s all part of the Memorial Day festivities planned to honor members of our community who have served our country.

The parade starts at Town Hall at 10 a.m. and ends at the Veterans Memorial, near the cemetery on the corner of Pond and Nahatan Streets. My kids tell me that when they visited the Historical Fisher School, they learned that the little drummer boy from the American Revolution is buried in that cemetery.  Is that true?
