A Holiday Lesson in Simplicity

Google, and an article listing the top five toys of all times bring perspective to gift buying for one new mom.

On Saturday, Dec. 25, my husband and I will be celebrating our baby girl’s first Christmas. Overcome with excitement building up to this special day, I’ve been putting a lot of pressure on myself to find “the” perfect gift for our daughter. One that encapsulates how magical this day is for our family.

At a loss of what material good could hold such significance, I decided to turn to my good friend Google for advice. How is that for a statement about modern society? We rely on an electronic search engines to recreate the magical essence of Christmas.

Regardless, a quick search revealed “The 5 Best Toys of All Times” as reported by Wired Magazine. The list includes:

  2. Box
  3. String

  5. Dirt

Once again, Google did not disappoint. I was humbled by this article, and ashamed at my overzealous consumerism. I realized that my daughter will have no memory of what she received on her first Christmas and hopefully I will not either. And honestly she rather just play with a ball and watch our eyes light up as she attempts to crawl after it.

So thank you, Google, for yet another lesson. Instead of busying ourselves with obligatory gift giving this year, my husband and I plan to fully appreciate the gifts we have already received. We will watch the world through our daughter’s eyes, with wonderment and awe and enjoy all it has to offer in its simplest state.
