WHS Cheer Blog - A Few Words From Coach...

The WHS Cheerleader's Blog to keep our fans updated on our road to the 2012 MSSAA South Regionals!!!!

Although the cheerleaders have been working all summer long, our season officially started last week! Entering my second year of coaching, I walked into the 2012-2013 season with very high expectations, not only made personally but also from the team and school.

For those of you who don’t know, the WHS cheerleading team had a complete makeover which ended the season with a standing ovation at our yearly pep rally. With all the success from last year, we have already made enormous steps towards our goals for this year and we haven’t even had our first game yet!

In the years I have worked with high school squads I can honestly say this team has the biggest hearts and so much determination to achieve every goal they have set for themselves. We have some serious shoes to fill from last year and have already outgrown them!

In August the cheerleaders attended UCA Cheer Camp out in the woods of PA and they rocked it! Not only favorites of the staff, but also the teams around us could not help but become friends, including Monteville High School from NJ who performed a rap…yes a rap written by WHS on the final night talent show. We left camp with some new skills, an improvement award, a spirit stick to take home, a hula hoop queen and winner of the coaches’ dance off.

Along with heading off the camp the girls have been coaches to our Pop Warner program for the town. Over the past years our Pop Warner program has decreased in size and they turned to us to help build it back up! Considering that several of our cheerleaders were former Pop Warner cheerleaders they have taken on a great deal of responsibility and pride in what they have accomplished with them. Don’t miss our combined performance with the Pop Warner team on Friday during the home opener against Bedford at half time!

On top of going to camp the cheerleaders also raised enough funds to pay for camp in FULL for 15 participants, which comes to about $3,000!!! We have continued our fundraising efforts through several different avenues including washing your cars, collecting your cans and bottles and hosting Mary Kay/Lia Sophia parties! As the head coach I have really tried to embody the mindset that everyone needs to earn what they receive. Especially when this sport has no equipment, no pads, etc. and yet is still more expensive than most sports!!!

2012 is looking like a head turning year already for Westwood and we have no intentions to stop! We are holding choreography this weekend to put together our routine for our competition season. This year is going to be the year that Westwood’s name will be on the order of appearance at the MSSAA South Regionals for the first time!!!!! Your support and love is felt as a team and we couldn’t thank our fans more! Keep an eye out for our weekly blogs to update you all on how our season is going.
