Vintage Westwood: Buckmaster Pond

A look back at Westwood's history.

The following was submitted by Nancy Donahue of the Westwood Historical Society:

In 1885, Dedham granted Buckmaster Pond to the town of Norwood to help expand the town's sparse water supply. All of the revenues were going to central Dedham and the citizens of West Dedham weren't reaping any benefits. The prospect of higher taxes caused by the purchase of the water company and the joining of the metropolitan water and sewer systems was enough to trigger petitions for the incorporation of West Dedham into the town of Westwood, which happened just before the turn of the century in 1897.

Whenever I see a stroy about this pond, I have to remind people that this pond IS NOT SAFE FOR SWIMMING. My son and I nearly drowned there this summer, there is a huge drop off very close to the shore. My son went from ankle deep to 13 feet under in ONE step. I went in to grab him and I also slipped way under. Knowing how to swim doesnt help when youre panicked and taken by surprise. Had it not been for a good samaritan who happened to be there, we would have surely drowned. btw...If you are the good samaritan reading this- youre a true HERO! Please email me at ccandmb@gmail.com. I never did get to thank you properly for helping us!
