Blessing of the Animals at First Parish of Westwood

All creatures and their human friends are invited to the First Parish of Westwood, UCC on October 6 at 11:30AM for the Blessing of the Animals.  Anticipating "a cheerfully chaotic event", the church welcomes residents of Westwood and local communities to participate in this family activity.

As caregivers for all creation, pet owners have a special connection to their beloved companions.  The Blessing of the Animals will celebrate this love and the caregiving that is expressed daily by young and old alike.

All pets should be managed on a leash or in a cage or container.  For children who find themselves unable to have a pet, teddy bears and other stuffed animal companions may be brought for a blessing.  Anyone who has a sick or immobile pet or one that is deceased is welcome to bring a leash or other memento to participate in a remembrance.

A Blessing of Animals takes its inspiration from St. Francis of Assisi, the Patron of Animals.  Amongst other things, Francis is remembered as a friend and protector to animals.  Legends have left us with idyllic pictures of how beasts and birds were susceptible to the charm of St. Francis' gentle ways, how they entered into companionship with him and often felt protected by him.  It is said birds listened so reverently to his sermon along the road near Bevagna, Francis chided himself for not having thought to preach to them before.  He also found great delight and solace in simple things such as the rising sun or flowers, all aspects of nature.

First Parish of Westwood is located at 340 Clapboardtree Street.  The event will take place in front of the Parish Hall, across the street from the sanctuary.  In case of inclement weather, the blessing will be held inside the Parish Hall.
