Westwood Sharps Collection Program Now in Effect

Residents must now dispose of needles or syringes in proper disposable containers, and not in public trash bins or dumpsters.

As of July 1, Westwood residents are no longer allowed to dispose of sharps in regular, residential trash barrels or dumpsters. Sharps include such objects as needles, lancets, and syringes.

The reason for the change is due to an amendment to the Massachusetts Medical Waste Regulations, which states that all towns must comply with removing sharps from the stream of trash and residential waste, according to the Town of Westwood's Summer 2010 Newsletter.

The Westwood Board of Health is now providing disposal containers in which to place sharps, as loose needles pose a health hazard if left in public trash.
