The Sights in and Around Buckmaster Pond

Welcomed by the sunshine after four days of constant rain, a group of fishing enthusiasts took advantage of the warm weather Thursday afternoon at Buckmaster Pond. 

While the majority of those fishing stuck to the edges of Buckmaster Pond's shores, an occasional canoe or fishing boat was spotted out along the water.

The spot is a prime location for fishing in Westwood. During the springtime, the town holds an annual fishing derby at the pond, with this year's even taking place on Saturday, May 8, and was sponsored by the Westwood Recreation Department. In the wintertime, the pond is popular for ice skating.

But Buckmaster Pond, open from sunrise to sunset, provides more than just a great fishing spot. Many residents also take to the paths off of the sidewalk along Pond Street to some open areas to by the shore that are perfect for setting up shop for an angling adventure.

"We are going to get some bicycle racks (in the area)," said Steven Olanoff, vice chairman of the Westwood Planning Board. The bike racks are being installed thanks to the Westwood Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Committee and the Metropolitan Area Regional Bike Parking Program.

Near the parking lot at Buckmaster Pond, there's a large field with two stone benches facing the water, a great area for dog walking.

This field also makes an excellent spot for enjoying a picnic on a sunny day.  There's plenty of room to toss a Frisbee back and forth, or even to lay out a blanket and catch some rays.  This weekend will be an excellent chance to have one last relaxing afternoon in the sun before autumn crawls in.

When the sun shines off the gently rippling pond it produces a mirror image of the trees on the shore and the cloud-speckled blue skies that slowly shift above.
