Heat Advisory Over in Norfolk County, But Humidity Remains

Westwood Senior Center for residents looking to cool off from the heat, which caused a few power outages in the area.

While no Heat Advisory is in effect today, temperatures continue to hover around 90 degrees, and will continue to do so through the weekend.

In addition to a number of safety tips from the Westwood Health Department to avoid heat-related illness, senior citizens in town can look to Westwood Senior Center for some added relief.

The building is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, said Pat Larkin, the Director of the Westwood Council on Aging. In the case of extreme prolonged heat, though, hours would be extended.

"In the case of an emergency, we're always open," Larkin said. "We try to encourage people to come here in the summer, because we have activities every day and lunch every day. It's cool here and it's pleasant."

The center offers a host of activities for seniors to engage in during the day, including bingo, baking, quilting, and bridge.

"We have a little lending library if anyone wants to pick up a book," Larkin added. "We have computers if they want to do some emailing to friends and family."

The Senior Center acts as a safe haven for seniors battling the heat, and is ideal for anyone looking to cool off during the case of a heat-related power outage - provided the center itself doesn't lose power, Larkin said.

Such outages were reported across the state yesterday, including Legacy Place in Dedham, which closed at one point to conserve power.

A morning report from NSTAR listed two power outages in Westwood on Tuesday, affecting about 21 customers. One began around 9 p.m. last night on Briar Lane and the other around 10:30 p.m. on Willow Street, according to NSTAR's report.

The Westwood Town Clerk's office received no official reports of any outages, and the town offices also did not lose power.

Temperatures in the Westwood area are expected to remain in the lower 90s through the weekend, with a chance of precipitation on Saturday and Sunday.
