Heat Advisory in Effect, Highs Could Reach 100

Advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. for most state counties.

The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued a Heat Advisory from noon today until 7 p.m. for the majority of the state, including Norfolk County.

Temperatures in Westwood were already hovering around 92 degrees by 10 a.m. today, but were expected to reach as high as 98. Adding to that, Heat Index values could soar as high as 101 degrees.

"You should stay inside where it's cool as possible, and drink lots of fluid," said Westwood Health Director Linda Shea. "You also shouldn't exercise during the heat of the day." The ideal times to exercise during such heat, she said, are early in the morning or after dusk, when the heat isn't as extreme.

Likewise, residents should be sure to wear hats and sunscreen while outdoors, Shea added, and should also try to lend a hand to anyone who might need it.

"We just encourage people to check on their neighbors and seniors," Shea said.

Shea also said camps at Hale Reservation usually take the proper precautions in terms of avoiding heat-related illness among campers.

"One good thing is the kids at Hale swim every day," she said, "so a lot of times they'll customize the programs to have the kids swim more."

Temperatures are expected to remain around 90 tomorrow and then hover around the mid-to-high 80s for the remainder of the week.
