The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Central Massachusetts for Sunday and Monday that includes possible severe thunderstorms, damaging gusts of wind and small hail.

The heavy rainfall could result in some localized flooding.

Jim Arnold, weather expert with the Shrewsbury Emergency Management Agency, points out that the Storm Prediction Center assigned a 15 percent chance of large hail, 30 percent risk of damaging straight line winds and a two percent risk of tornado.

"I am in agreement that the main threats, as thunderstorms roll across Massachusetts later this afternoon, are large hail and strong straight line winds," said Arnold. "I do not think there are enough dynamics to create rotation and isolated tornadoes within this system. That said, the SPC does see a small chance of tornadoes and this needs to be respected as conditions could change later in the day [on Sunday]. The main threats should be large hail and strong to damaging surface winds along with torrential rains from thunderstorms."
