5 Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 12

A daily roundup of what's happening in Westwood.

Today's Forecast: Rain is in the works for today, mostly before 5 p.m., with a high near 42, according to the National Weather Service

1. Everyday Spanish for Teachers: The Early Childhood Professional Association (TECPA) will be on hand in Westwood today to hold a workshop that helps teachers learn how to integrate Spanish into their curriculum. The event starts at 6 p.m. and costs $25.

2. Today's Sports Schedule: The boys varsity swim team will take on Durfee High School today, while the co-ed Alpine Ski Team will compete in a giant slalom. For more information, click here

3. Committee Meetings Tonight: The Westwood Environmental Action Committee will meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. to discuss such topics as the Green Communities Act (including stretch code), recycling reports and activities, report on energy consumption analyses and collaboration with Westwood Department of Public Works.

4. Christmas Tree Collection Reminder: The town will be collecting Christmas Trees this week as part of the regular trash pickup schedule. Trees must be placed at the curbside before 7 a.m., and must be free of plastic bags, stands and other materials. Residents should also make sure that trees are not covered by snow or frozen to the ground.

5. Sharps Collection: The Westwood Board of Health's Sharps Collection kiosk, located at the Westwood Senior Center, is currently out of service and under repair. Sharps can instead be brought to the kiosk located at the Islington Fire Station on Washington Street or to the BOH office at 50 Carby St.
