Westwood Teen Designs New Library Logo

In conjunction with last weekend’s Library Dedication Ceremony, the Friends of the Westwood Library introduced a new logo.  Designed by 18-year-old Tara Zafar, when she was a senior at Westwood High School, the logo is a modernized version of the group’s old insignia and resembles a book caught in mid-read.

Holly Joe, a member of the FOL board, described the stylized representation as having a lot of movement.

“It is a contemporary free-flowing depiction of a book in motion,” Joe said.  “It takes a cue from our old logo and puts a current spin on it.”

Zafar’s logo was selected after the Friends approached last year’s Graphic Arts class at the high school.  Each member of the class was asked to submit a design and work with the Friends as they would a client in the real world.

“Zafar’s logo was a clear favorite right from the start,” said Joe.

In creating the winning design, Zafar said she wanted the logo to be straightforward and relatable.

“I wanted people to look at it and see immediately what the whole library is about,” she said.  “I also wanted it to attract a younger audience which makes up a lot of the town’s library users.”

The logo’s colors take a page from those at the new library.  “We had Zafar mirror the calm, cool and sophisticated colors found in the new building,” said Joe, who added that she is pleased that the FOL could grow and change as the library evolves.

“The logo exemplifies both the new spirit of the library and the renewed focus of the FOL on making Westwood a great library town,” Joe said.
