Library's First Month Shatters Records

Following on the heels of its record-setting first day, the new Westwood Public Library shattered several more records in July, its first month of operation. Falling in spectacular fashion were the counts for monthly visitors, items checked out and library cards issued.

The library saw 40,339 patrons walk through the door in July, almost triple the previous record of 14,633 set in August of 2002. Those same patrons checked out 25,608 items…approximately 6,000 more than the March, 2001 high of 19,837.

Additionally, the library issued 781 library cards -- both new cards and renewals. According to Library Director Tom Viti, the library usual issues a total of 650 cards in one year.

“These amazing numbers truly showcase how quickly Westwood has embraced its new library” Viti said. “We knew, intuitively, that Westwood and its residents loved the new space. The numbers prove, without a doubt, just how much it means to them…and to us.”

Viti points to the building’s design, it’s twenty-first century features and the enthusiasm of his staff as the key factors behind the wildly successful first month.

“Patrons like the warmth and feel of the different rooms, and seem to instinctively understand how the building functions,” he explained. “Our librarians feel the same and have been very enthusiastically working with the public to help them get the most out of our new library.”

Viti added that, with such impressive numbers, the self check-out stations and automated sorting equipment have both played vital roles in making a very busy first month of operation feel flawless.

“We couldn’t have done it without the latest in technology, a great staff of librarians and a truly enthusiastic general public,” he said.
