New Volunteer Program for Teens Being Readied at the Library

Designed for teens, the program will enable middle- and high-school students to perform volunteer work at the new library.

The Westwood Public Library today announced the formation of the Junior Friends of the Library.  Designed for teens, the program will enable middle- and high-school students to perform volunteer work at the new library.

“We are excited about this new endeavor that we are running in conjunction with the Friends of the Westwood Library,” said Lizzie McGovern, Head Children’s Librarian.  “It will allow teen book lovers and readers to become more involved.”

Members of the Junior Friends will help the Children’s Department with its library programs and much more.

“Our Junior Friends can assist with story-time, craft preparation and special program set up,” said McGovern.  “They can also help us with the shifting of library collections, shelf-reading, and the organization of library spaces.”

Additionally, teens will be able to volunteer and staff special events organized by the Friends of the Library, including the group’s Westwood Day booth and its book sales.

Teens must be in at least the eighth grade to volunteer.  The group will meet regularly at the library on short Wednesdays beginning this fall, said McGovern.

“Even though we’ll have the official kick-off this September, we are recruiting now,” she added.  “We’d love to have a full cadre of volunteers when the new school year starts.”

Teens interested in becoming members of the Junior Friends of the Library should send an email to  wwdchildrens@gmail.com and can check the library Facebook page at www.facebook.com/WestwoodLibrary for details.
