World War II Memorabilia Exhibit

A special exhibit will be held on Sunday, March 6, from 2:00-4:00 PM at the Fisher Schoolhouse. The exhibit will feature memorabilia of World War II in the South Pacific, including historical maps highlighting the sites of various sea battles, Navy recruiting posters, numerous pictures and commemorative covers of the USS Honolulu CL-48, the ship on which Lieutenant Commander Donahue served. One of the pictures shows actor Jason Robards who was a crew member on the ship. During the exhibit, our program speaker, Charles Donahue, will be available to discuss the South Pacific collection and to answer any questions.

Books, including many of the works of Samuel Eliot Morison, will be on display. Shortly after the United States entered World War II, Dr. Morison proposed to his friend President Roosevelt, to write the operational history of the US Navy from the inside, by taking part in operations and writing them up afterwards. In March 1943, while attached to Pacific Fleet Forces, he made three trips up “the Slot” on the Honolulu and took part in the Battle of Kolombangara before returning to the mainland.

A special highlight is a Japanese Senin-bari, a scarf covered with French knots stitched by a thousand women. They were usually worn as belts or sashes and considered to confer courage, good luck and immunity from injury (bullets) to the soldiers who wore them.
