WestwoodWinds to perform its third concert August 7

WestwoodWinds, Westwood’s first community concert band, will hold its third summer concert Tuesday, August 7 at 6:30 in Westwood High School’s Cafeteria Courtyard. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the WHS Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all.

Over 30 community members have been holding weekly practices to prepare for what promises to be an evening of enjoyable entertainment and a celebration of local musical talent. Members range in age from their early teens to retirees who will bring their skills and passion for music making to this concert.

WestwoodWinds was created by James Giurleo, who upon his retirement from his position as Westwood’s K-12 Director of Performing Arts, sought a way to create the opportunity for former Westwood High School graduates and community amateur musicians to continue their musical pursuits. “Many people miss the pleasure and reward of making music after their high school experience in a school band. WestwoodWinds provides another opportunity for young and old to come together to flex their musical muscles once more,” says Giurleo.  “Unlike swimming or riding a bicycle, one may get a little rusty but really never forgets how to play.” Under his direction, the ensemble will play musical selections that reflect our common American experience including patriotic, Broadway, jazz, movie and TV themes. Interested attendees may bring lawn chairs or a blanket and a picnic to enjoy the music with an evening breeze.
