Concert at First Parish of Westwood

Collaborative Concert Offered at First Parish of Westwood

On Sunday, March 6th at 3PM First Parish of Westwood will host a collaborative concert of the First Parish of Westwood and the United Church of Walpole choirs performing the “Gospel Mass” by Robert Ray and selections from the “Pilgrim Psalms” by Ross Lee Finney.  Joshua Nannestad, Music Director at First Parish of Westwood, will direct the choirs, which will be accompanied by United Church of Walpole Music Director Nathan Zullinger and First Parish Organist Karen Westerfield Tucker.  A free will offering will be taken at the door, and a reception will follow.

The concert’s unusual repertoire looks back at ancient musical roots while exploring modern styles and tonal languages.  The Pilgrim Psalms are based on the psalms and tunes found in the Ainsworth Psalter, the book of sacred music brought to the New World by the Pilgrims.  The Gospel Mass is the ancient form of the mass, but written in English and in the gospel style, complete with rhythm section.  Originally composed in 1978 for use in Robert Ray’s campus ministry, it has received both religious and concert performances by a wide variety of choirs – Catholic and Protestant, Black and White, American and world-wide.

This intriguing concert is a continuation of a collaboration begun last year with United Church of Walpole, and the public is most cordially invited to attend.  First Parish’s Meeting House and Parish Hall are handicapped accessible.  For additional information about the concert or programs at First Parish, please contact the church at 781-326-5344 or www.firstparishwestwood.org.
