The Crucible is inspired by the witch trials in Salem Village in 1692, and won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1953. A group of young girls in the town is caught dancing in the forest, which was forbidden. To avoid admitting the truth when caught, they accuse each other and the enslaved woman Tituba of witchcraft. When the accusations spiral out of control and his wife Elizabeth is arrested, John Proctor tries to discredit the “afflicted” girls as liars, but is condemned as a witch himself. Arthur Miller wrote the play during the Communist “Red Scare” of the 1950s. The play is a parable of what happens when hearsay is taken as fact and accusation presumes guilt. The play depicts a timely illustration of how a society can fall apart due to fear and suspicion based on false and unfounded accusations.
The cast are experienced professional-quality actors from Needham and surrounding towns, and are looking forward to presenting this timely allegory to you.&nbsp;
Patrick French from Westwood is playing the lead John Proctor. There are many Needham residents in the show.
Performances are at Newman Elementary School, 1155 Central Avenue, Needham.

Thanks to the generous support of the Westwood Cultural Council and the Mass Cultural Council, a series of drawing and watercolor painting of nature classes will be offered at the Westwood Council on Aging. This mini-series will include 2 drawing and 2 watercolor classes held this spring and upcoming fall at the Westwood COA. Pre-registration is required by phone (781 329 8799) or in person at the Westwood COA and limited to 10. Fall classes to be announced.&nbsp;All Art Supplies are included.

First Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its eighth concert of the 2023-2024 season featuring The Wilson Mountain Skyline Ramblers: Bluegrass &amp; Americana, at First Church and Parish Dedham, 670 High Street, Dedham on Friday, May 17, 2024 at 7:30 pm in the Parish House Auditorium. There will be refreshments for purchase. Tickets are $15 and are available online at <a href="https://www.dedhamuu.org/concerts-at-first-church-and-parish-dedh" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Folk Coffeehouse | dedhamuu</a> and at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm.
This performance features musicians who met picking and singing together in the Boston area Bluegrass jamming scene, and includes Tim Parke on guitar, Jed Mehegan on Banjo, Cindy Thames on mandolin, Gene Favret on Dobro, Bas van der Brugge on fiddle, and John Brunette on upright bass. For the last several years Tim has hosted the monthly Bluegrass jams at the Dedham School of Music.
Together, The Ramblers perform a mix of classic and modern Bluegrass songs. They are highly influenced by Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, Norman Blake, Flatt and Scruggs, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Della Mae and many more. The performance will feature a curated set of Bluegrass favorites interpreted by each member’s personal voice and instrumental style.
First Church and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638 and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music program includes choir at Sunday services, the Parish Players theater troupe, and the Concerts at First Church Saturday classical concert series, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.
