The Westwood High School girls 4x800 indoor track team competed at the New Balance Nationals in New York last Friday, March 9, finishing second in their heat. The girls ran a school record, breaking one set in 1998, with a time of 9:39.15, head coach Jennifer Teahan told Westwood Patch in an email. The team consisted of senior Nora Smith, juniors Andrea Simi and Sam Kitchen and sophomore Celia Condrick. A video of the race can be viewed on YouTube; a copy of the video is included in this post.

Westwood's girls varsity hockey team continued a strong run in the MIAA First Round Friday night with a 8-1 victory over Scituate, followed by a 3-2 victory in the Quarterfinals on Sunday. On Sunday, Westwood built up a 3-0 lead on goals by Kim Egizi, Kelly Healey and Kat Heidleberger, and then hung on to win a hard fought 3-2 game vs. Gardner in a girls MIAA high school quarterfinal playoff game. The Westwood High School boys’ and girls’ hockey teams are set to compete in this year's MIAA State Tournament, and recently found out where they will be seeded, as well as who their first round of opponents will be. The girls team earned the sixth seed in the MIAA Div. 2 State Tournament after finishing the regular season with a record of 14-5-1, according to MIAA Tournament brackets released this past weekend. The girls will take on Scituate on Friday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Canton.  The boys team, meanwhile, earned the 17th seed in the MIAA South Division 3 Tournament after finishing the …

It may have been a vacation week for students in Westwood, but things were a bit busy for the Westwood High School basketball teams.  Westwood hosted this year's 2012 Riley Hoop Classic, which kicked off on Sunday and ran through Wednesday.  The event was an overall success, drawing fans from Norwood, Canton, Norfolk, Wrentham, Plainville, Arlington and Westwood.  The event treated fans to a handful of exciting games …

Westwood's girls ice hockey team goaltender Siobhan Burke posted her second straight shutout and two late goals powered Westwood to a hard fought 2-0 victory over a tough Medway/Ashland squad on Saturday, Feb. 11. Westwood pounded the Medway/Ashland net for the entire game, but goalie Kiley Nelson was up to the task making 45 saves. Westwood overpowered Quincy/North Quincy on Wednesday, 7-0, putting 45 shots on net and holding QNQ to only two. Kelly Healey opened the scoring for Westwood early in the first period, being sent in alone off passes from Ela Hazar and Kim Egizi. Hazar quickly made it 2-0 off a feed from Egizi. Olivia Fay then scored off a nice setup by Meghan Kelly to finish the first period at 3-0. It will be an exciting month for the Westwood High School boys and girls basketball teams.  Starting on Sunday, Feb. 19, will host the 2012 Riley Hoop Classic, which is sponsored by the Sharon Credit Union and Roche Bros. and runs from Feb. 19-22, according to an announcement by both teams this week. Kelly Healey scored on a 4-on-3 power play with less than five minutes left to lift Westwood to a 5-4 win against Scituate on Wednesday.  The Wolverines started quickly with first-period goals from Kim Egizi and Meghan Kelly, and dominated the period. Kim Egizi's hat trick on Saturday's game in Foxboro against King Philip led Westwood to a tough 3-1 victory. Westwood piled up 48 shots but KP's Alyssa Siegman was outstanding, keeping her team in the game. Two goals each by Ela Hazar and Kelly Healey led Westwood to a 6-4 win over Franklin in an exciting home game during Saturday's snowstorm.  Christine Regan scored her first varsity goal to put Westwood on top 1-0 early in the game. Westwood ran into a very strong Belmont team on Monday, which was coming off a great game knocking off top ranked Woburn in the tough Middlesex League. The game, which was held at Belmont High School, ended with a Belmont victory over the Wolverines, 4-0. Following a scoreless first period, goals by Becca Moore and Shannon Reynolds put Belmont up 2-0 after two periods.  Third period goals by Caroline McCarthy and Alexandra Cellucci put the game away for Belmont.
