Westwood High School The Westwood boys and girls basketball teams get the winter sports season started today, hosting Boston Latin Academy and Fontbonne Academy in non-league scrimmages at Westwood High School. The boys tip off against Boston Latin in the first varsity contest of the season at 3:30 p.m. today with the girls game following at 6 p.m. The Wolverine swimming and track teams won't hear the starting gun until 9 a.m. Saturday, when they officially begin competition, while the boys and girls ice hockey teams take the ice tomorrow afternoon for their opening games. The swimming and …
The top-ranked Xaverian Brothers football team capped a week of wins in Westwood with a 31-0 shutout of visiting Waltham Saturday at the Hawk Bowl as they improved to 2-0 with their 17th consecutive victory and have yet to give up a single point going into this week's showdown with second-ranked, rival Brockton. "It's a huge rivalry," said Xaverian coach Charlie Stevenson. First-year starting quarterback Chris Calvanese continued his impressive play, tossing three touchdown passes to three different receivers in the win. Calvanese found his favorite target, Mike Muir, for the first score than…
While many people may think of First Night as being in January, in Westwood, First Night is tonight. After students returned to the classrooms for the first time today, the Wolverines return to the court and pitch tonight with games against Tri-Valley Conference rival Bellingham. The only Westwood High School team not starting its season under the lights tonight is the golf team, which, for fairly obvious reasons, plays its season opening match at 3 p.m. today at Tr-Valley Conference rival Hopkinton. The boys' soccer squad hosts Bellingham at 6:45 on the pitch at Flahive Field while the girls…
With the start of the high school athletic season looming on the horizon, it is sure to be an exciting week at Westwood Patch.  Last week we provided a peek at the girls' soccer and field hockey teams at Westwood High School as well as the Xaverian Brothers soccer squad. Patch contributer James Maimonis brought us the story of the Wolverines girls' soccer team as it attempts to improve on last year's disappointing 4-10-4 record with a return to the postseason this fall. Maimonis also gave us some insight into the field hockey team's upcoming season and their hopes of becoming a more offensive…
This weekend saw the state's top-ranked football team from Xaverian Brothers High School cap the first week of the the high school athletic season with a visit from Bridgewater-Raynham Saturday morning for the first scrimmage of the defending Super Bowl champions. Walking into the school for the first time following the game in a nearly 19-year sportswriting career was nothing short of inspirational. Several years back, while working at a small, Central Mass. newspaper, I was fortunate enough to be able to cover some home, Boston Celtics games. While the team, which was then in the midst of …
While the Westwood Recreation Department's tennis programs were granted an extra two weeks of summer last week, athletes at neither Westwood High School nor Xaverian Brothers High School were afforded that same luxury as practices began this past Monday at both schools. Most of the rest of the fall sports programs join the action tomorrow with tryouts and practices. Thursday at Westwood, field hockey is first to hold its practice with the team taking Flahive Field at 7:45 a.m. The boys' and girls' cross country teams, as well as the girls swim team and the boys' and girls' soccer teams, begin…
With three regions spanning 29 towns, it is fairly unnecessary to say that competition in the summer Suburban Youth Baseball League is pretty tough. Reaching the postseason and tournament play in any of the league's age levels is a sure sign of a successful summer on the diamond, regardless of how long the team survives in the ultra-competitive tournaments. With that in mind, it is safe to say the future looks pretty bright for baseball in town as Westwood had not only one but two teams advance all the way to the Final Six in their respective SYBL Playoff Tournaments. Braintree got the better…
After Westwood's Williamsport All Star squad's sensational Little League World Series Tournament run ended with a 5-4 loss to Newton West in the Section 3 championship game Monday night at Lyons Field in Newton, one might think the 12-year-olds would take a little time away from the diamond. After all, August is good time for a family vacation and after an already long summer of baseball, including a spell in July with consistent, triple-digit temperatures, who could blame a kid for wanting to go to the beach? You couldn't even really blame a young boy that just wanted to sit in an air …
The Westwood Williamsport All Star team is one win away from winning the Section 3 Little League tournament going undefeated in three Pool play games to earn a spot in tonight's Section championship game. Westwood faces Newton West at 7 tonight at Lyons Field in Newton with the winner advancing to the State Final Four. Westwood defeated Newton West 6-2 in their Section opener last Thursday night. After Friday games were washed out by rain, Westwood went to work with their bats over the weekend, scoring 26 runs in double-digit wins over North Bedford and South Boston to earn their spot in …
Last week was tournament time for two Westwood baseball teams as the American Legion Post 320 team began its District 6 playoffs with a best-of-three series against Quincy while Westwood's Williamsport All-Stars went down the road to Norwood for the District 11 Little League baseball tournament. Both teams enjoyed successful starts to the postseason last week. Westwood wrapped up the District 11 Little League championship with back-to-back elimination game wins over top-seeded and undefeated Wellesley North and Walpole before beating Wellesley South on Sunday for a spot in the upcoming …
The Westwood American Legion Post 320 baseball team had the first seven games of its season postponed while Xaverian Brothers High School made its memorable run to the State finals. Post 320 will begin its own playoff run this week after finishing the regular season with an 11-7 record, good enough for second place in District 6 West headed into the final day of the regular season. The top four teams from both the East and West divisions begin district playoff series on Tuesday. Pairings will be announced tonight. After opening the season with a loss to Canton the day after Xaverian's loss in…
I've always said that the families that play together stay together. Westwood's Kelly Rich, Kerri Harrington and Misha Beatty have been playing lacrosse together since coming up through the town's dynamic youth lacrosse program. They've experienced the highs of winning four straight South sectional titles and back-to-back Wolverine State Championships sophomore and junior year together as well as the lows of falling just short of a third straight this spring. They've carried on what is a rich girls lacrosse tradition at the school, playing with characteristic Wolverine pride, determination …
