Visions for Vacancies in Westwood: What Should Fill Islington Space?

A frequent look at vacant store fronts in the community.

In this new feature, we'll be asking you what kinds of businesses you'd like to see fill various vacancies in Westwood.

Through Visions for Vacancies, you can have your say and sound off on what a vacant business property should become before plans are drawn.

Westwood Patch will highlight a vacant building or structure in the Westwood community frequently each month or as vacancies become available.

This week we turn to the plaza in Islington, where the space formerly inhabited by Jack Conway Realtor is currently available between Islington Pizza and the U.S. Post Office.

The plaza is also home to Cold Stone Creamery and is adjacent to Cafe Diva. But what should fill the void? Would an additional restaurant fit well, or perhaps a new retail store of some kind?

If you had your way, what would you want to go into the open spot? Let us know what you think in the comment section below.

I think Westwood could use either a great woman's boutique or a bakery that makes gourmet sandwiches and pastries. There is certainly a lack of both in the town!

Come on over to the other side of town. We have Sassy, which is a great women's clothing boutique. They carry some wonderful brands! Also, have you been to Decor and More lately? They have a lot of women's accessories. Great jewelry, handbags and scarves among their various gift options. Also, High Street Market carries some wonderful pastries from Rosie's Bakery and my fav's...Tate's cookies...among some other local brands 8-) I completely agree on the Hardware Store idea....we could really use one in town, but that wouldn't be an ideal location.

Westwood could use a regular mom & pop hardware store. Such a pain having to go to Home Depot or Lowe's.

That plaza was the home of Town Paint & Supply some years ago. One could find almost anything there and usually at a reasonable price. I, for one, miss it a lot.

haha..there USED to be one there..where the Real Estate office is...next to the Mobil station ( which USED to be Mike's Automotive..a great mom-pop garage)....so every old-school mom-pop quaint business has been knocked to the curb and replace by BIG BUSINESS!!!! so much for the Westwood of old.....

There actually was a paint and hardware store in that location years ago, Town Paint and Supply. It was long gone before the big box stores opened. So, with the limited parking there, I wonder if a hardware store would be viable now. Islington Pizza probably has a non-compete clause in their lease with the landlord prohibiting similar businesses from moving in so, so much for a new food place there. I guess the boutique wins so far!

In Dedham, a group of artists have gotten together to fill empty storefronts until they are rented. It would be interesting to see that happen in Westwood.

Great idea! The storefront would look presentable to prospective tenants.

Question - what's up with the ugly brown building on Rt 109 to the right of Chiara? It has a For Lease sign, but I can't imagine any business would want to move in that location. It's a terrible "first impression" building when entering Westwood. It would be a huge capital investment, but tearing that down and rebuilding there would be a long term positive for the town.

I would love to see a family/kid's drop in art space. Something like Art Beat in Arlington (http://artbeatonline.com/).

OR... how about our franchise of "PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS." There are many kids who play sports in town. I am all for recycle and pass it on if possible.
