Teen's Death at Westwood Lodge Goes to Trial
At issue is whether the staff acted appropriately preceding the 2006 death of a teenage girl.
Jury selection begins today for a trial focusing on the 2006 death of a teenager at a psychiatric care center in Westwood
Monique Payne was 14 when she died while a resident at Westwood Lodge, a psychiatric hospital in town.
Payne died of complications from an untreated brain tumor. Her mother, Theresa Payne, told Fox 25 that understaffing at the facility is to blame.
Monique complained for four days about headaches. According to Fox, when 911 was called, it was too late. The tumor was an inactive one Monique had for years.
"They ignored all her cries. She was asking and telling them my head is killing me. I need to go to the doctors," her mother told Fox.
The trial to decide if Westwood Lodge staff acted promptly enough starts today with jury selection at Essex Superior Court.

As a former employee, unsafe staffing was constantly an issue. Also upper management is unprofessional, unwilling to make positive changes and is only concerned about "the bottom line". Very sad.

Psychiatric patients are not being properly treated here. There is nothing therapeutic about this hospital. Lucille has no compassion or people skills. Westwood lodge is a dangerous place to work do to staffing and their protocols. Not worth losing your license snd being sued.

I was mistakenly sent to Westwood from Milton Hospital and I repeatedly told them it was a mistake for me to be there. The papers said that I was schizophrenic and I had auditory hallucinations. I have never in my life been diagnosed with those conditions. I was horrified when I arrived and they did nothing to comfort me upon my arrival. They only put me into a depression that I have never felt in my entire life. Not only was there a mistake in my admission, but I was not allowed to leave. I was forced to stay at Westwood from Monday night until Friday and If my boyfriends' mother had no pushed them to release me, I would have stayed throughout the weekend and they would then try to release me if they had gotten their paper done. During my stay, I was able to observe how the staff treated the patients who had been correctly placed there, and I was unpleasantly surprised. The staff treated the patients like dogs and made me feel sad for the way these patients were being treated. They had no respect for the patients who were there and did not treat them correctly. I made two friends, one of which came when I was already admitted into Westwood and she was constantly denied of her medications when she desperately needed them. I am currently speaking with an attorney to prevent anyone from suffering the way I had at Westwood Lodge, and I hope there won't be others to experience the mistreatments given from the staff and doctors at Westwood.

This is so sad to read because my son was recently admitted at Westwood lodge and from the time i put in a foot inside that hospital i had a really bad feeling. My son was diagnosed 6 yeasrs ago with ADHD, PTSD and a r/o mood disorder based on the PTSD. My son is a little aggresive and medication was injected to him on his buttocks without my consent. I was so upset because i signed a consent form to only administer Tylenol for pain and adderal for his ADHD. They even discontinued giving the adderral which got him extreamly hypper and aggresive. The phychiatrist and nurses made decisions for me with out letting me know.

the type of person that i observe alot and i notice how the childrens couldnt leave the room if they were looked up. Not only that was my observation my son also told me the same. My son was there 4 days and 3 nights and that was the worst days and the worst hospital he ever been too. I was even treated bad because i brought some food for my son to eat. The supervisor told me that my son couldnt eat that food because it may have drugs. I felt offended and humiliated based on her comments especially because i dont look like a drug addict. Im not sure if i was treated differently based on my ethnicity and skin color but i also saw how others was treated better. I truly feel that theres more going on in that facility and yes i am writting a letter to the State department of Mental Health. I hope any parents that are going thru a familiar case please report your feelings and toughts, have your children that was admitterd write down how they felt. And for future parents that are thinking of having your child admitted to this place please sit and think about it before making a decision and regretting it. I know it can be very hard but have hope and faith. My name is Ana and my email is: senoritamarrero@yahoo.com anyone can reach me anytime for opinions or concerns.

my boyfriend and father of our unborn child has been here a time before and is here at this very moment he cried that he didnt want to go back because he didnt want to be"drugged up"all the time and the staff at his last visit held him down kicking and screaming while they stuck needles in him.I told a friend where he was and she had nothing good to say.As she said they over medicate and dont treat the isssues or problems..I feal very helpless and reading these comments make me want him out of there. Its so sad thats theres really nothing i can do i dont think because his parents are the ones that had him sectioned there in the 1st place..He wants me too visit him there but dont want to see him as he called it in a "drugged up"state

My name is Michelle colon. I was there when i was 15. I'm am now 34. For the 3 months i was there, the tortured me, stuck needles in my butt which are called i.m.'s. They wrapped me in a long green cloth with boards and straps. I was a human burrito. The staff would step on my back in order to pull the straps as tight as possible. I couldn't feel my fingers and sometimes had to urinate myself. They deprived me of food. They kept me in my room for days at a time. Solitary confinement. Only because"i was too close to my peers". Apparently feeling love and joy was not allowed. I went there due to depression, anxiety, adhd and left with nerve damage, ptsd, claustrophobia and social phobia. I feel empowered that i am finally able to tell someone the nightmare i lived in while at Westwood. I'm still haunted by the memories.
