Road Accident Map Features Westwood Casualties

A new online map reveals two of the nearly 370,000 vehicular deaths across the country within an eight-year time frame took place in Westwood.

A digital map that was released last month by The Guardian revealing road casualties across the United States between 2001 and 2009 includes two deaths in Westwood.

Nearly 370,000 people died from vehicular accidents between 2001 and 2009, according to The Guardian, and ITO World, a group of transport data mapping professionals, put together a display of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Zooming into the map reveals two vehicular deaths in Westwood, both of which occured on East Street - one involving a 64-year-old male in 2004 near the East Street Rotary and a 58-year-old female in 2009 under the East Street Bridge.

Vehicular accidents are nothing new to the East Street area in Islington. The East Street Rotary alone is a veritable hub for fender-benders and accidents as traffic weaves in and over Rte. 128.

The East Street Bridge, meanwhile, has a reported history of bad accidents, with one accident requiring the use of a Medflight helicopter in August.

What's more, the area has been a recent cause for concern after officials in Westwood and Dedham discussed a proposal for a new healthcare facility on Allied Drive, which juts out from the rotary and lies on the borders of the two towns.

Thanks for the prior article about the East Street bridge and this article, but nothing seems to force any change in the East Street bridge no matter how many accidents occur.

What was heard, incidently, from traffic planning people in Westwood was that this change was proposed, but was opposed by support of local neighbors and -- I think, but am not sure -- the MBTA.
