MBTA Proposes 23 Percent Fare Hike
The MBTA’s new proposal, released Wednesday, also includes service reductions and eliminations, as well as a hiring freeze on all non-critical positions.
The MBTA announced a series of recommended fare increases, service cuts and administrative changes Wednesday morning to close its $185 million budget gap in fiscal year 2013.
Westwood residents, like everyone else, will be paying more to ride the T if the proposal is approved. Officials and residents in town reacted to the initial proposed cuts last month.
Here are the recommended fare increases:
- Local bus fares with a Charlie Card would go up a quarter to $1.50. The current fare is $1.25.
- Commuter rail single trip and monthly passes would be increased an average of 29 percent, depending upon the zone of travel (the commuter rail can be accessed at Westwood Station and Islignton Station).
- Subway fares would be $2, 30 cents more than the current rate of $1.70.
MBTA staff members are scheduled to present the recommendations to the MBTA’s board for approval on April 4, according to the release. The changes would go into effect July 1, the beginning of fiscal year 2013.
