The bee, organized by the Westwood Education Foundation, differed from traditional, individual spelling bees, as students huddled in teams of three or four, and presented their words on dry-erase boards during several rounds.

Fourth and Fifth Grade Bees were held on Wednesday this week, and were moderated by Superintendent John Antonucci and John Lawler, a Language Arts Teacher at Thurston Middle School, respectively.

Moderators presented a word, followed by its definition, and then used it in a sentence. Students then had only a matter of seconds to spell them out. If a word was spelled incorrectly, the team was eliminated from the event.

The winners of the first round competed in a second round, and then in a final championship round.
