AT&T Completing Cell Tower Work at Thurston

The cell tower is the second to receive updates within the past year.

The tower that sits atop the roof at Thurston Middle School is undergoing some work this week.

The work is actually being done to a cell tower antennae on the roof, one that's been in place for about a decade; AT&T began work to update the tower itself last summer and is nearly complete with the renovations.

"They closed in the top of the cupola and changed out the antennae within the structure," said Heath Petracca, Director of Business and Finance for Westwood Public Schools. "This should provide better reception for the surrounding area."

The antennae itself has been in place for close to 10 years, said Town Administrator Mike Jaillet, who added that the update comes as part of a 10-year lease on the tower.

"In doing that, they wanted an upgrade to the antenna to the increase capactiy," Jaillet said.

It's not the only cell tower in town to have received an update in the past year.

Among turbulent discussions around the proposed construction of a cell tower at Temple Beth David last year, an updated replacement of the cell tower at Morrison Field was also proposed last May.

The Westwood Planning Board approved a special permit for that project last August.
