The State Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of a fire on Dover Road in Westwood that caused extensive damage to a 200-year-old home Monday morning.

The rear of the house was the first to ignite before the blaze spread to other parts of the unoccupied home and burned for several hours before nearby residents called for help.

"The fire was in the first and second floors and through the attic upon our arrival," Westwood Fire Chief, William Scoble, said.

Scoble said the home will like be demolished after fire crews clear the area.

It is so sad. As a passerby of that house during my commute to and from work, I have often admired that house and its beautiful maple tree on the front lawn. The owners have been doing extensive work for months now. I was absolutely shocked when I drove by this morning and saw that the house was completely gone. The tree was still standing there but looked so alone. My thoughts are with the owners.

Thank you for your kind words. My family has lived at the home since 1964. Every wedding, funeral, holiday and birthday for three generations have been in that home. We have the memories but are struggling to accept this loss. Taking each day one breath at a time..
